Well i’m making a broken mirror photo collage which requires a bit of work and is def not for the supersticious since you gotta break a mirror or two, but you can make a scarf if you knit or croche, write a poem if your into poetry, make a necklace if you do beading, make a picture frame if your into wood working.. There are tons of ideas.. Email me if you have any questions or want a few more ideas (i’m a craft person so I do all of this and then some) bmeyer2264 @ gmail.com (remove the spaces)

How about some homemade sweets: Cookies, Cake, Chocolate dipped strawberries.

You could also just spend a few hours on mother’s day doing things for her: Serve breakfast in bed, wash her car, do the laundry, wash the dishes, etc. Sometimes the best gift is getting back a bit of the "care and feeding" duty mom’s have been doing for you!

It’s a bit late for some projects…

But ‘on the day stuff’ could be a handmade cake, decorated by your self with a personal message on top.

(quick recipe: Set the oven to Gas 4, (140 C?) Grease (or grease and line a cake tin with butter (and greaseproof paper) Find a clean cooling grill (like the clean grill out of the oven or your grill).

Mix 4oz soft butter with 3 oz caster sugar til the mixture is a whole lot paler than the butter you started with. beat two eggs in a cup and little by little beat it into the butter creme paste you made with butter and sugar. You’ll end up with a soft gooey mix if you mixed it enough (if you hand whisk it will take 5-10 mins, if you use an electric whisk it’ll take a couple of minutes. In another bowl mix 6oz self raising flour, 1oz pure cocoa powder, 1/2 teaspoon baking powder. Mix that into your wet ingredients, (if you have some you can add vanilla essence).

Chop some dark chocolate into ‘chocolate-chip’ sized pieces, and stir them in. Scoop the mix into the baking dish and put into the oven for 30 minutes. (After 25 minutes slide a knife into the centre of the cooked cake and if the knife is clean take the cake out and leave to cool for 5-10 mins, If the knife has ‘cake goo’ on it (not just melted chocolate), leave it to cook for 5-10 minutes more.

When it’s done leave it to cool in the baking dish for 10-15 minutes. Then turn it out onto the cooling grill. It will either turn out perfectly, or if it turns out in pieces don’t worry, coz it will taste just great either way.

If it turns out ‘cake shaped’ you’ll be able to decorate it with whatever you want… a dusting of icing sugar, chocolate fondant, candles, ‘icing writing’… a thin layer of jam and a whole pile of fresh fruit decorated on top.

If it falls to pieces, you can serve it in glasses like a knicker-bocker-glory and have layers of cake, ice-cream and fresh fruit topped with squirty cream, hundreds-and-thousands and cocktail umbrellas, or even those sparklers you can get for cakes.

Next year, give yourself more time to make something in advance.

I have it! My daughter bought me a fair ivy surprise package subscription and i loooooved it–I really like surprises and mail. I got a new package every month that was cute and pampering. For the actual occasion she printed me a gift notice from their site that let me know surprises were on their way…it was very exciting!

It as a really thoughtful and creative gift, and since it came every month it felt like she was constantly buying me new lovely things :)

There are some things you could make for your mom right at home. You could bake her a cake, make a collage of pictures of the two of you as you were growing up, make her some jewelry out of old jewelry that you have lying around. You could write her a poem and recite it to her. Try making her a beautiful Mother’s Day card and putting the poem inside of it. You could print out a picture of the two of you when you were a baby, paste it on a piece of cardboard, then cut into little pieces to make it into a jigsaw puzzle for her to put together. These are little things that moms love (myself included!). You could also say that you will make her dinner and watch a chick flick together just the two of you. Good luck!

Interestingly, the historical significance of Mothering Sunday, has been lost to most good people of the U.K. While studying at Oxford, I came across an ancient text preserved in the library’s inner recesses. Studying the Pre-Cesar text, I was astounded to find the day was actually referred to as Smothering Monday. When the Romans began to sack the townes in the Isle’s the villagers would smother their children, between the breasts, rather than submit to foreign invaders against them. This festival started shortly before the Gallic wars.

Hope you found this interesting!

Perhaps you could sculpt a scene from Smothering Monday, to demonstrate how mum’s in the U.K. have had such an impact on our lives? I would if my Mum was still alive.
